What is an Electric Recloser

The device is a switching device that performs the function of automatic sectioning of overhead or combined power lines. The word "recloser" itself appeared relatively recently. In the zero years, many power engineers were unfamiliar with this concept. Previously, the device was called a sectioning unit, which was used to divide overhead lines into sections. This division allowed and still allows to temporarily take emergency sections out of service to repair damage without disconnecting power supply to the entire facility. However, the recloser still has some differences. The main element of the device is a vacuum circuit breaker , which allows automatically disconnecting and reconnecting AC circuits according to a predetermined algorithm. It protects power lines from overloads and short circuits. The device also allows for monitoring, recording the characteristics, parameters of power grids.

Plan and Design Power System for Addition of New Reactor to the Existing Anhydride Plant

The major equipment for this modification consisted of Reactor and Salt Heater on anhydride plant. Both equipment were handling hazardous material. Thus the environment around the major equipment was determined and found to be Class 1 Div 2. The electrical system was designed accordingly as per codes for classified hazardous area. Due to large motor load of the Reactor Motor and poor power factor. Soft Starter was added to inhibit the starting inrush current and capacitor were added to mitigate the power factor. In addition to the two major equipment there were number of other pumps that required Variable Frequency Drives to regulate the speed. The client purchased the electrical equipment from Germany marketplace. That presented some challenges in understanding the drawing prepared in German standard.The other challenge was to interface the German standard connections to the equipment in conformance with Canadian Standards and as per Canadian Codes.
